Management Team

Brian Glaister, President and CEO

Brian is a recognized expert in the development of technologies for people with disabilities. He co-founded Cadence Biomedical (then Empowering Engineering Technologies) in August, 2007. Prior to Cadence, he was a Mary Switzer Fellow with the National Institute for Disability and Rehabilitation Research where he developed new prosthetic technology for lower limb amputees. He was also a Technology Commercialization Fellow with the University of Washington’s Center for Commercialization where he identified business opportunities for university-owned intellectual property. He has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Villanova University and a master’s degree in bioengineering from Arizona State University.

Chie Kawahara, VP Operations

Prior to joining Cadence, Chie worked at BD Diagnostics/Tripath Imaging where she helped develop cervical cytology screening devices. She also worked at Boston Scientific (then Guidant) where she worked on the research and development of patient management diagnostics for cardiac resynchronization devices. She has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and a master’s degree in biomedical engineering, both from the University of Michigan.

Jason Schoen, VP Product Development

Jason is a co-founder of Cadence Biomedical (then Empowering Engineering Technologies). Prior to Cadence, he worked at the Department of Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Healthcare System developing and evaluating new technologies for lower limb amputees. He has also worked at Froetdert Memorial Hospital studying biomechanical performance of adults and children and at the Milwaukee Veterans Hospital where he helped develop robotic rehabilitation equipment for people recovering from stroke. He has a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering from Marquette University.

Alex Pacanowsky, VP Engineering

Alex is a co-founder of Cadence Biomedical (then Empowering Engineering Technologies). Prior to Cadence, Alex worked at TD Williamson where he developed imaging equipment to inspect oil and gas pipelines and at Med Associates where he developed industry-leading neuroscience research products. He has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Villanova University and a master’s degree in bioengineering from Arizona State University.

Board of Directors

Michael Hovanes, Chairman of the Board

Michael is an expert in medical device development and marketing. Most recently, he was the President and CEO of InstruMed, a company that made devices for use in the orthopedic operating room. He led InstruMed through acquisition by Stryker, a market leader for orthopedic devices.

George Saul, Director

George is a serial entrepreneur with extensive experience leading teams developing disruptive new technologies. Most recently he was President and CEO of Cypress Microsystems which he led through acquisition by Cypress Semiconductor. He has an MBA from Georgia Tech and a B.S. from the United States Military Academy at West Point.

John Castle, Director

John has a B.S. and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an MBA from the Harvard Graduate School of Business. He currently teaches entrepreneurship at the University of Washington. He has co-founded or served as an executive with three companies and has served as principal, director, or advisor to dozens of early stage companies.
