Cadence is currently developing a new class of device, a kinetic orthosis, which provides stability and movement assistance to weakened muscles without the use of powered mechanisms. The device has the potential not only to improve walking ability, but to also allow those who would otherwise require wheelchairs to regain strength and coordination.

Worn externally on the legs, our device uses a proprietary tuned system of springs and cams to capture the energy typically wasted during the beginning of a step. The device then returns this energy at the end of the step to amplify muscle strength, helping to propel the user forward and and lift the leg in preparation for the next step.

Proof of concept trials are underway for our kinetic orthosis prototype. First sales of a commercial version are expected in early 2012.
